How To Make Dalgona Coffee (Whipped Coffee)

Jump to Recipe - Print Recipe

Let me show you how to make trending Tik Tok frothy dalgona coffee (whipped coffee) at home in easy steps.

All you need to make this delicious and creamy drink is 3 ingredients you would already have in your store cupboard, a mixer and 5 minutes.

Welcome to the year 2020 where the world is almost at a standstill but yet we are taking it one day at a time, hopeful and enjoying our cups of coffee.

Who would have thought that whipped instant coffee would be a thing the whole world would be crazy about? Dalgona whipped coffee took the world like a storm and it is now viral thanks to Tik Tok, Youtube, Facebook and Instagram. In fact, all forms of social media should be thanked for this frothy instant coffee whipped drink.

I can’t begin to tell you how many times I have made this Korean iced coffee drink ever since I learnt how to make it. Thank you @imhannahcho For sharing this fancy instant coffee recipe on  Tik tok, we are all hooked.

    a cup of beaten coffee.

    Dalgona Coffee Recipe (Whipped coffee)

If you love frothy coffee like latte, frappe, cappuccino and co then you would love this fluffy and creamy South Korean iced coffee drink.

Dalgona coffee drink or whipped coffee as called on Tik Tok is not new but was made popular by social media and yes, we are grateful for it.

You can serve this drink iced cold or warm. I prefer mine cold, that way my whipped frothy topping can stay fluffy till the last sip. It is delicious and a great pick me up in the morning or anytime of the day.

    Dalgona Coffee Vs Frappe

Are thinking what I am thinking? Both are the same only that they are made differently. Frappe is made in a blender and uses the same ingredients as the Korean coffee drink. Frappe is of Greek origin while Dalgona is of Korean origin. This beverage is also known as beaten coffee in Pakistan and India

What you will need to make it

To make this recipe, you need equal portion of

    Instant coffee

granulated Sugar (caster sugar would work too)

    Hot water

    Serve with

You can serve this recipe with any milk of choice from full fat whole milk to skimmed milk or non dairy milk

    Tools

    Hand mixer (electric mixer) or

    Milk frothier or

    Hand whisk or

    Mason jar

How to make Dalgona coffee at home

To a shallow bowl or cup, add instant coffee (I used Nescafe, you can use any other brand of instant coffee you have), hot water, sugar and mix until dissolved.

If using a small bowl, use just one whisk of your handheld mixer or both is making larger quantity. Whip the dissolved coffee until it becomes stiff and light in colour. (this happens around 3 to 5 minutes of consistent whipping, trust me it is all worth it)

Add your warm or cold milk of choice to a cup and spoon the fluffy coffee over it. Mix together gently and enjoy. You can serve this drink with some ice.

    Dalgona coffee without sugar

You can enjoy this frothy instant coffee drink without sugar and making it healthier by making some simple and fun swaps.

Make this recipe keto, vegan and vegetarian friendly by swapping sugar for other alternatives like maple syrup, granulated sweetener, coconut sugar, stevia with erythritol or honey.

You can also make dalgona coffee without sugar or any other sweetener, I tried it but not a fan. It tastes bitter and it was foamy instead of stiff peak whipped and it only stayed fluffy for a little while.

    How to store

If whipped to stiff peak, it would stay up to 3 days in the fridge in an airtight container. I am sure it would stay longer, I just think 3 days is safe.

    Tips

    • Use less milk for stronger coffee taste
    • Use non-dairy milk or skimmed milk for a healthier option
    • Remember ratio 1:1:1 works best for this recipe, that is an equal part of water, instant coffee (not ground coffee) and sugar.
    • reduce the sugar if you find this drink too sweet for your liking
    • Espresso powder work for this recipe as well.
    • for more grownup variation, add some Irish cream to the milk. It tastes so amazing

    FAQs

Can I make it without instant coffee: the answer is yes and no, I haven’t tried this drink other alternatives but it is possible as I have seen other variations on social media from mocha (cocoa powder and instant coffee) to matcha powder and many more.

Can I make whipped coffee without a hand mixer: it is quicker with a hand mixer but in the absence of this wonderful tool, you can use a hand whisk, spoon or a fork.

Alternatively, add all the ingredients into a mason jar, cover it tightly and give it a good shake until it becomes frothy and whipped. This would take longer than when you use a hand mixer but is a good form of exercise for that upper arm.

How much calories are in this instant coffee drink: instant coffee is low in calorie about 7 calories to 0 calories. It is the addition of sugar and milk that makes this drink calorie dense.

How do I drink Dalgona coffee: you can drink this beverage with warm or cold milk of choice. The whipped topping can also be stirred into the milk. It is so delicious and refreshing.

Can I make it with brown sugar: yes, you can make whipped coffee with brown sugar or demerara

Can I make it with a flavoured coffee: yes, you can and in the absence of a flavoured coffee, add a teaspoon of extract of choice e.g vanilla extract, salted caramel extract, orange extract e.tc to flavour this beverage.

Other variations to make this beaten coffee: I have videos of people using Nutella and double cream in place and instant coffee. In my opinion, this is not the same as dalgona and the taste can't be compared. If anything, you are consuming more unnecessary calories.
